Distillery weighs in with games boost

A HEAVYWEIGHT sponsorship package from a Moray distillery will boost the prize fund at 12 Highland Games across Moray and Grampian.

Tomintoul and Dufftown are both part of the Grampian Games series of 12 across the north-east over the summer.

Dufftown distillery Glenfiddich has pledged a five-figure sum towards the heavy events championship at each games, which will see record cash prizes offered to competitors.

Jim Brown, chairman of the Grampian Games Association, said: “Glenfiddich has supported the Grampian Games for 27 years, and this backing is critical to the continuation of our games.”

North-east athlete Bruce Robb won the Glenfiddich heavy events championship trophy for the first time last year.

In addition to the financial contribution Glenfiddich will provide single malt whisky as prizes, as well as supplying clothing for the athletes and giving complimentary lunch boxes.

Elizabeth Lafferty, PR manager for Glenfiddich in Scotland, said: “All 12 of the Grampian Games events offer a great day out for locals and visitors alike. Glenfiddich is proud to continue to support this important aspect of Scotland’s traditional cultural heritage.”

The Tomintoul Games are on Saturday, July 17, while Dufftown takes place on Saturday, July 31. Other games in the schedule are Cornhill, June 5; Oldmeldrum, June 19; Aberdeen, June 20; Drumtochty, June 26; Stonehaven, July 18; Aboyne, August 7; Ballater, August 12; Grantown, August 22; Lonach, August 28; and Braemar, September 4.
