Thomas Alston acquired Mains of Eddlewood in 1657 and Burnknows of Eddlewood in 1672. He married Barbara Hamilton and had children: |

Had nine children including Dr Charles Alston, who became Professor of Botany and Medicine in Edinburgh. A genus of plants Alstonia was named after him. Three other brothers were doctors: Thomas in Yarmouth; Robert in Ligorno, Italy; and John in the West Indies. |

IV. John Alston of Muirburn, merchant and banker. Emigrated to Maryland in 1759 at the age of 16 and returned to Scotland 1770, later becoming manager of the Thistle Bank. Married Patrick (sic) Craigie in 1772 and had five surviving children: |
