New domain name ending .scot was launched today and Calico has been accepted on to the .scot Pioneer scheme. The scheme is for early adopters of the .scot ending and we join other companies on the ‘Sunrise’ phase of the domain ending launch, where trademarked names can be secured for a premium price. The general registration phase opens on Tuesday September 23rd, for normal domain registration.

We think this is the start of an exciting era in Internet history. Calico has been registering a variety of Top Level Domains (TLDs) for many years including .com, .uk, etc. We’ve also registered domains with many other endings for other countries around the world. As a Scottish-based ISP, we’ve been envious of these countries having their own endings. Now for the first time, Scottish users can have a TLD that reflects their own country, and irrespective of the independence referendum vote later in the year, the .scot domain ending is something that the Scottish nation can be proud to use.

Calico is no stranger to being a pioneer, as we were the first Scottish ISP to use 0845 dial-up in Scotland in the pre-broadband days and we have always sought to stay at the forefront of Internet developments.

No price details have been issued for the general phase yet, but as soon as it’s available it will be published at the Calico website and at www.calico.scot.
