Salmon Fishing at Rosemarkie
Rarely seen nowadays, this photo shows sweep-netting off the beach at Rosemarkie on the Black Isle, just north of Inverness. In the background are the Eathie television transmitter and the Sutors of Cromarty.
Sweep-netting involves towing one end of a net out to sea with a rowing boat, laying it out in a hook shape with the mouth open towards the incoming tide. Salmon swim into the hook and then circle around, never finding the exit. Once fish are in the hook, the men on the shore pull a rope attached to the end of the net closing the hook and pulling the fish onshore.
Most sweep-netting licenses in Scotland have been bought up by angling associations, and are then not used to increase the number of salmon reaching the rivers.
