Inverewe Garden, near Poolewe
Inverewe Garden is a botanical garden in Scottish Highlands located just to the north of Poolewe in Wester Ross. Due to the beneficial effects of the Gulf Stream, the climate on this coast is unexpectedly mild, and this allows the garden to grow many trees and shrubs normally restricted to more southerly latitudes. Arriving at the garden having traveled through breathtaking, but apparently bleak wilderness, and being faced with lush palm trees and Eucalyptus is quite startling.
The garden was created in 1862 by Osgood Mackenzie on the estate surrounding Inverewe House, and has been maintained by the National Trust for Scotland sine 1952.
