Gruinard Bay, Wester Ross.
Gruinard Bay became infamous after the second world war when it became known that the island that lies 1/2 a mile offshore was used for testing Anthrax as a potential weapon. For over 40 years, it was forbidden to land on the island, until 1986 when an English company was paid half a million pounds to decontaminate it. The 520 acre island was soaked in 280 tonnes of formaldehyde diluted in 2000 tonnes of seawater. Topsoil was also removed.
