Calico was originally set up in 1994 by Paul and Maggie Symonds, and as many of you will already know, 10 years later on the last day of 2004 we had a staff buyout. So we're now celebrating our 25th and 15th birthdays at the same time. Doesn't time fly!?!
We've seen a lot of changes in the past 15 years, one of the biggest being the introduction of the .scot domain name. This has proven to be very popular since it's inception in 2014. What we're seeing now is that .scot's are now the second most popular domain ending after the more established .uk endings, it's even overtaken .com in popularity in terms of our customer orders.
The uptake in .scot domains isn't solely the result of political feelings. We've mostly seen these domains registed for personal and marketing purposes. If your business has a strong connection to Scotland, its tourist industry or a Scottish related product, then using a .scot domain makes a lot of sense. It's also a great way to have a nice email address that shows your heritage or where you're based. Inevitably some people will use .scot as a political statement, which is fine too.
A further development we've seen here is in the provision of our servers. Originally all the servers were based here in our Cromarty premises, but we've moved most of these into The Cloud. This gives us greater flexibility when we need to upgrade the hardware as services become more popular and we need to increase performance. It also allows us to utilise more robust infrastructure that comes with cloud servers being housed in large data centres.
Of course another big change in that time was that Evelyn Wright joined our team, and has been with us now for 12 years. She's proven to be invaluable when it comes to supporting our customers. We've all very much enjoyed helping you all over the years on our helpdesk, from our Highlands based office.
Here's to the next 15 years, Cheers!
