When Kirsty Pryer left college 10 years ago to join Cromarty company Calico Internet Ltd, she was criticized for not moving away from the Ross-Shire town.
“So many people told me that there would be no prospects for me if I stayed in Cromarty,” says Kirsty. “They said that I should move to the central belt or a city in England.”
Now, 10 years later, Kirsty is the Managing Director of Calico, and has just supervised their recent expansion.
Calico specialises in Internet domain name, web hosting, email and broadband services. Following a staff buy-out four years ago, Kirsty took over as Managing Director and has led the company ever since.
“Calico has continued to grow over the past four years,” explained Kirsty. “We’ve now taken on a new member of staff, Evelyn, and have spread out into adjoining premises to give us some more room, as the existing offices were getting a bit cramped”.
“People are wrong when they say you have to move away from the Highlands in order to progress yourself,” she continued. “Now that we have broadband in 90% of the Highlands, there are lots of opportunities for running a business from here. And let’s face it, who would want to live anywhere else?”
