Kirsty Pryer, MD of Cromarty-based internet hosting company Calico UK, has just been appointed as a STEM Ambassador, following PVG certification. STEM Ambassadors volunteer their time, enthusiasm and experiences to encourage and inspire young people to achieve more and progress further in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Having grown up in Cromarty and attended Cromarty Primary School and Fortrose Academy, Kirsty would initially like to focus her attention on Black Isle schools, then look further afield to schools within Ross-shire and the Inverness area.
"My route to becoming a STEM Ambassador was via Girl Geek Scotland, an organisation that looks to tackle the gender gap in the technology industry," says Kirsty. Girl Geek aims to increase the number of girls studying tech subjects at school and therefore the numbers then going on into technical careers. "As a woman running a tech business it made total sense to me to get involved."
"Girl Geek requests that you become a STEM Ambassador to start the ball rolling, and I'm looking forward to working with mixed groups as well as girls in the future."
Digital companies based in rural Scotland can find it difficult to source staff with the right technical skillsets so by encouraging the uptake of learning in schools and further education, it is hoped that the region will retain young people in a growing industry.
